An endodontic treatment is necessary when the tissue inside the tooth root, known as the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp is like the "heart of the tooth" and is full of vessels and nerves that form branches and canals.

Tooth inner anatomy is very complex and usually contains more than one canal.

Inflammation or infection can occur due to multiple factors, including deep decay, repeated dental work, faulty fillings or crowns, and dental trauma.

Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat and/or cold, tooth discoloration, swelling and tenderness of nearby gums.

However, sometimes you may not experience any symptoms but still need endodontic treatment. If you leave your teeth untreated, extreme pain or abscess may be caused.

Classic endodontic treatment procedures include:

• anesthesia,
  

• accessing the roots (the pulp chamber ensures the asepticity of the work area and avoids tooth contamination),
  

• cleaning the roots (removing any infected tissues),
  

• shaping & disinfecting the canals,
  

• filling the canals system
  

• tooth restoration

Endodontists have more expertise and training, but they also have more experience treating conditions affecting the inside of your teeth.

Due to their additional training, endodontists are skilled at finding the cause of oral and facial pain, treating dental injuries, diagnosing cracked teeth and performing other tooth-saving treatments.

As endodontists, we do limit our practice exclusively to endodontic treatment. Additionally, we perform routine and highly complex procedures, including endodontic treatment or retreatment and endodontic microsurgery.

We advise that you return to your dentist between 2-6 weeks after your treatment is completed to get your final restoration, unless otherwise advised. This time allows most of your sensitivity to subside before your tooth is further processed.

If your tooth does not receive the necessary final restoration (crown or filling) and the temporary filling wears out, the root canal will get infected and require retreatment, microsurgery, or extraction.

Final restoration is either a filling or a crown and will be placed to protect your tooth from fracture and further infection, as well as restore your tooth to full function.

The non-restored tooth is prone to fracture. Thus, do not chew or use the treated tooth extensively until your dentist restores it.

When surgery is complete, your treatment information will be sent to your referring dentist.

We advise you to return to your dentist for any further appointments.

Local anesthesia is used as when you get a filling at your dentist.

Additionaly, we take every measure to ensure that the process is pleasant and non-painful.

As we specialize in the treatment of painful teeth, we are very careful to ensure complete anesthesia of the working area.

In most patients, the feeling of numbness usually subsides after 2-3 hours. It is normal to feel your teeth more sensitive for a few days after treatment. That subsides after a few days and with pain medication.

This discomfort is usually from the inflamed tissues around the end of the root.

Endodontic treatment may be completed in 1-3 sessions, depending on how severe your tooth condition is. 

Due to our extensive experience, usually we need only one session to complete your treatment.

In the case of multiple sessions, the first session usually involves infected tissues' cleaning and canal disinfection.

Additional sessions may then follow for the filling and final tooth restoration.

Usually, before or after an endodontic treatment, we recommend that you take anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen and paracetamol, to relieve pain.

Rarely, we may recommend antibiotics.

Endodontic treatment cost depends on numerous factors, such as problem severity, localization, materials' cost, etc.

It is important to discuss treatment cost with your dentist before starting treatment.

In our practice, visit and examination cost will be deducted from the total treatment cost; if you wish to continue with it.

Healing after Endodontic treatment depends on numerous factors, such as problem severity, type of bacteria, dentist's skills, treatment quality along with patient's immune and healing capacity.

Usually, a few days after endodontic treatment, there may be some tooth pain and sensitivity, but this usually disappears within a few days or a week.

For faster healing it's important to follow your dentist's instructions on how to treat your tooth after treatment and contact the practice directly if there are any concerns or problems.

Sometimes, if the treatment was not successful or if there was a complication, you may need to repeat the treatment or move on to other treatment types such as microsurgical endodontic treatment, which can often resolve the problem with excellent success rates.
